About Romania
"Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea. Almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south.
Romania emerged as a personal union of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia under prince Alexander John Cuza in 1859 and as the Kingdom of Romania under the Hohenzollern monarchy, it gained recognition of independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. In 1918, at the end of the World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the Kingdom of Romania. At the end of World War II, parts of its territories (roughly the present day Republic of Moldova) were occupied by the Soviet Union and Romania became a socialist republic, member of the Warsaw Pact.
With the fall of the Iron Curtain and the 1989 Revolution, Romania started a series of political and economic reforms. After a decade of post-revolution economic problems, Romania made economic reforms such as low flat tax rates in 2005 and joined the European Union on January 1, 2007. Romania is now an upper-middle income country with high human development, although within the European Union, Romania's income level remains one of the lowest.
Romania has the 9th largest territory and the 7th largest population (with 21.5 million people) among the European Union member states. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest (Romanian: Bucureşti), the 6th largest city in the EU with 1.9 million people. In 2007 the city of Sibiu was chosen as a European Capital of Culture. Romania also joined NATO on March 29, 2004, and is also a member of the Latin Union, of the Francophonie, of the OSCE and of the United Nations, as well as an associate member of the CPLP. Romania is a semi-presidential unitary state."

Timișoara
Timisoara (in German Temeswar or Temeschburg, in Hungarian Temesvár, translation: "the town on the Timis") is the largest city and capital of the Timis county from the Banat region in western Romania. The name of the city comes from the Timis river, named by the ancient Romans "Tibisis" or "Tibiscus". It has a population count of 336.089. Including the suburbs, the population is around 400,000 people, which makes Timisoara one of the main cities of Romania. Also Timisoara is a cosmopolitan city with an old high ethnic diversity, including Germans, Serbians, Hungarians living in harmony with the Romanians (now majority).
Timisoara is an important university center, it has a very active cultural life and a rich history with alot of firsts and unique things of which people from Timisoara are proud of. Also the city on the Bega is the home of the much loved football team Politehnica Timisoara, or POLI, the most loved and acclaimed football team in the Banat area.
Timisoara is the place from where the 1989 Revolution has started, agains the communist regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, becoming after days of rallies and fatalities, a martyr city and the first free city from Romania. This led to the rallies from Bucharest and to the success of the Romanian Revolution of 1989.
Because of its rich history, of more than 900 years of documented history, there are alot of things to be seen in Timisoara. The Austrian domination era from the 17-18 centuries have left a good imprint on the city's architecture, and the most beautiful buildings can be admired in the Union Square, but other places in the old town as well. In the city center visitors can see the landmark buildings of Timisoara, the Orthodox Cathedral built by King Michael I, and the Opera building, home to a four-language theather which reflects the ethnical diversity of the city. The Opera bulding is also a symbol of the 1989 Revolution, because it's balcony was a tribune for the revolutionaries, and thus is a symbol of Timisoara's spirit, very dear to the people from Timisoara.
